As spring rolls around, we welcome the start of the new season’s sports, including Track and Field. Orcutt Academy High School’s track season has begun and is looking to be successful.

The athletes have been staying in shape throughout the off season and recently jumped back into regular practices. The team practices together on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday on Orcutt Academy’s campus at 5pm, and Mondays and Wednesdays to practice on the track at Allan Hancock College. The team has around 30 members and uniquely does not have specific captains. They are coached by James Barr and Marc Tosches.

Last Wednesday, the team travelled to Santa Maria High School for their first meet of the season against local schools Santa Maria, Saint Joseph’s, and Pioneer Valley. The meet was successful according to senior Max Daniels who shares that “everyone did well and it looks like we are going to have a good season.”

The team hopes to make it to CIF this year. Last year they made it to the first round but no further. This should be easy with many new athletes joining the team along with previous record breakers like juniors Donovan Miller and Josiah DeBruno, and seniors David Conable, Max Daniels, and Jaden Davis returning for their final season.

Athlete Jaden Davis talks about what needs to be done to improve from last year, “We could improve on technique and strength, the 4×1’s could improve on their handoffs.” Davis also stresses how important it is for the team to know how to properly use the blocks, something they struggle with now. Spartans, if you have an interest in joining the team, stop by a daily practice. Good luck this season Track and Field.
