At Orcutt Academy High School, students who wish to park their cars on school grounds must pay for it. The student must obtain a parking pass, which costs $5-$10, in order for their car to remain being parked in the parking lot they so choose.

But why should students have to pay for parking at their own school?

There are two parking lots which are considered to be on the OAHS campus, the main/front parking lot, which costs $10 per year and is mainly reserved for staff members, and the parking lot located at the back of the school, behind the OJHS baseball and soccer fields, which costs $5 per year.

This whole “pay for parking” rule has ruffled a few feathers among students, and I believe for good reason. Many students, including sophomores, juniors, and seniors who drive themselves to school, are constantly scouting around for an open spot, which can cause tardies, arguments, and just overall frustration and stress. Some even resort to parking all the way up the street from the campus just so they’re guaranteed a parking spot, at the cost of a long walk to and from school.

Although I understand and agree as to why some students are upset, I would also like to acknowledge the other side of it. There are many students with cars, and there just isn’t enough spots for everyone. So I understand that this “pay for parking” rule has regulated that in some way, so that the students who really want to have a good spot, are given the option to. But even if a student pays, they still are not guaranteed a parking spot.

In the end, I honestly don’t believe any change could potentially be done. Even if they made it a “first-come-first-serve” basis, students would still be angry because someone took a spot before them, forcing them to find an alternative. Orcutt Academy is a small school with even smaller parking facilities, and I don’t think that will change any time soon.

Great job Lauren! The overall flow of this article was easy to understand and well written. I really like how you looked at the story from all angles and presented both perspectives. You’re opinion was clear and the writing well structured, nice!

Not only do they have us pay but it seems, especially so in the back, as though they refuse to spend the income on improving or even maintaining the ‘pavement’. I’d be happy to even pay more than the $10 I paid to park in the back if I knew it would be in some major way going to improve the lot itself.

I agree with many students in that the parking situation is quite frustrating. However, I also understand that our school has never had good facilities, so this issue seems to have no solution. Overall, I want to know where the $10 is going and wished that it was being used to aid this situation in some way.
