My entire life, I have been an enormous fan of baseball. By both watching and playing the sport, I have accumulated experience and knowledge. With this in mind, I want to take some time to look at the upcoming 2019 MLB season.

The 2019 free agent class is one of the most talented in recent memory. Batting champions, MVPs, Cy young winners, All-stars, and many more outstanding athletes fill the market as teams get ready for April. First, I will be focusing on the biggest holes that major contenders need to fill before the 2019 season.

Houston Astros

The Houston Astros finished the 2018 season with 103 wins, and made it to the ALCS for the second time in a row. Their biggest strength was the starting rotation, which led them to a championship in the 2017. The departure of Charlie Morton, Dallas Keuchel, and Lance McCullers left Houston depleted and desperately in need of pitching. Verlander and Gerrit Cole make a great one-two for the Astros, but this still leaves them with some unanswered questions.. Uber prospect Forest Whitley could make his debut sometime next summer, but likely won’t make the team out of spring training. Brad Peacock has experience starting, but is having great success out of the bullpen. Also, Houston will need to acquire at least one starting pitcher; although with Keuchel, Gio Gonzalez, still without a team, and the Marlins listening to offers for Dan Straily, there are still options out there for the 2017 world champions.

Los Angeles Dodgers

For two consecutive years, the Dodgers have made it to the fall classic and lost in heartbreaking fashion. Trades of Yasiel Puig and all-star Alex Wood signified a retooling of Los Angeles, while catcher Yasmani Grandal leaving to Milwaukee via a one year deal, leaves the backstop barren. With all of the major free-agent catchers already finding homes, the only available option is the Marlins’ JT Realmuto. Realmuto, arguably the best catcher in baseball, would require at least two of the Dodgers’ top prospects, and probably more. If Los Angeles can get the deal done, they could have a good chance at making it to the World Series for a third year in a row, possibly with a championship parade to go along with it.

Cleveland Indians

If the Indians cannot figure out a way to upgrade their subpar outfield, they risk wasting the years with their young core of Lindor, Ramirez, and Trevor Bauer. Cleveland has one of the best pitching staffs in the league, but it is undermined by one of the worst outfields. Michael Brantley leaving for Houston in free-agency made the situation even worse, although there are still options. Carlos Gonzalez, Adam Jones, and Marwin Gonzalez are all still available while upgrading either of the corner outfield spots. Cleveland needs to capitalize now if they want to compete with the likes of Boston and New York, or get ready for a major rebuild in a few years.

Overall, 2019 will see a lot of exciting talent. If these teams can make these moves and figure out their rosters now, they will be teams to watch come April.

I loved the article. I follow baseball but not too seriously. I think it is interesting that Los Angeles still has a chance to make a run even with its semi rebuild.
