The US government shutdown happened on January 19, 2018 at midnight. The Republican and Democratic parties could not find equal ground on a few issues. But what were they? Let’s find out.

First of all, the main and probably the biggest issue was regarding undocumented immigrants. Democrats fought for the protection of 700,000 “dreamers” (undocumented children from a different country) who had already been covered by the DACA (Deferred Action for Children Arrivals) program. But the Republican party is implanting strict laws about immigration. For example, Trump in his campaign time wanted and is still trying to get that wall up and deport many immigrants.

Immigration is an incredibly touchy subject to a lot of people. Now if you are someone who would like to come to the United States and restart your life in a new country, then there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. However, there are concerns about increased violence due to illegal immigration.

Luckily the government opened up 3 days later on January 22, 2018. Both sides came to amends when the Republicans said they will let the Democrats debate their idea to the senate floor on a level playing field. They must show their idea to the floor before February 8 or else the we could see another shutdown. Hopefully our political parties will come to amends and the government will still go on.
