March Madness Finals Recap

This year’s March Madness came to an end with a couple intense Final Four matchups and one lackluster championship game, giving fans an unexpected path to the finish. As soon as the Elite Eight games finished in Indianapolis, UCLA, Gonzaga, Baylor, and Houston were the only teams left to try and make a run for the trophy. The Final Four opened up with the one seed Baylor Bears delivering a beating to the two seed Houston Cougars, fueled mostly by Jared Butler’s impressive performance of 17 points along with 4 assists. Just a day later, the twelfth seed UCLA Bruins almost pulled off an incredible underdog story by forcing the Gonzaga Bulldogs into an overtime thriller. The game was close all the way until Gonzaga’s Jalen Suggs sealed the deal with a halfcourt buzzer beater, leaving the game with a score of 93 to 90. With the stage now set, Gonzaga and Baylor hit the floor on April 5th to see who would come out on top and win the title. With both teams sitting at the one seed, most fans expected this game to come down to the wire, which to many’s surprise did not happen. Right off of the tip, Baylor came out shooting almost perfect from three, and getting seizing every opportunity to cash in on second chance buckets. This barrage put the undefeated bulldogs down 29 to 10 midway through the first quarter. Gonzaga eventually managed to shrug off most of their offensive problems, leading to the bears only having a 10 point lead over them at halftime. Mosted hoped for the gap to close coming out of the break for an exciting finish, but Baylor’s offensive firepower and defensive pressure kept up all the way to the buzzer, ending the game with a massive 16 point lead over Gonzaga. This win gave the Baylor Bears their school’s first ever men’s basketball NCAA Championship title, and ended Gonzaga’s historic undefeated season run.
