Ted Cruz’s Cancún Vacation

During the past week, snow storms have put Texas in a power crisis with hundreds of thousands of families losing power. Along with losing power, even more people are lacking access to clean running water and there are long lines for essential supplies such as food and gas. Even above the lack of resources, the cold temperatures (without the power for heaters) have been the main issue. Many have resorted to using their cars for heat, and a few people have even been burning fallen trees in their neighborhood to warm up. Throughout the storm’s duration, 20 people have lost their lives to causes such as hypothermia and carbon dioxide poisoning. While this type of weather may not be seen as unprecedented in other places in the U.S., the temperatures and weather in Texas is record breaking which is part of the reason why there is such a crisis.

This all ties in with Ted Cruz, one of Texas’s senators, who decided to take a trip with his family to Cancún during the middle of the storm. While the rest of the country was freezing and without power, Cruz was staying at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Cancún. Cruz claimed he took the trip “to be a good dad,” inferring that he took the trip just for his daughters’ comfort. Regardless, perhaps you would find this trip to be for. It could be reasoned that Cruz should have been in Texas and trying to aid the crisis; and at the very least show his loyalty to the state he was elected to represent. As for his daughters’ comfort and safety, thousands of families in Texas, many with young children, have had to make sacrifices and push through the crisis while staying in Texas. And of these families, only a small percentage has the type of safety net and financial stability that Cruz’s family has, so they were already better off than many of the other families in Texas during the storm.
