Another Man’s (Musical) Treasure

Music is something that helps a lot of people through many different times in their lives. Life isn’t always easy, but for many people, music makes the load a little easier to bear. There are main genres of music that everyone has heard, these genres are on top of the “umbrella.” Underneath those metaphorical umbrellas, though, are a lot of musical subgenres that don’t really get that much attention or credit when they really deserve it. In this article, I am going to rate my top three personal favorite musical subgenres!

Coming in third place on the list, is 60’s and 70’s alternative rock. This marked what probably was the peak of the hippy rock movement. People were carefree and in tune with their surroundings all the time! They enjoyed the presence of music and magic and all things radiating beauty. It’s not the most underrated genre, but it’s sad that not many people talk about it. I really enjoy the hippy rock movement, so I love this genre a lot. Some 60’s/70’s alt rock artists are Blue Öyster Cult, Jimi Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Elton John, and the Ramones.

Second on our list is electroclash which puts together synthpop, new wave and electro pop from the 80s to the 90s, forming a very nice techno feel from the music. This is one of my personal favorites because it’s so unpredictable. These artists take random samples from anywhere like text to speech nonsense or things like a cough drop wrapper untwisting. Some electroclash artists I recommend are Crystal Castles, Breakbot, Death From Above 1979, The Bloody Beetroots, and Van She.

And, last but not at all least on the list, coming in first place, is shoegaze/dreampop! I’ll mostly be referring to it using the latter. The genre has this name because it sounds very dreamy, and if I were to describe the feeling of listening to it, I’d have to say it feels like riding a wave on a cloud. Dreampop is a very addicting genre, once I started listening to it, I couldn’t stop. You will not regret checking this genre out for yourself. Some dream pop artists include The Marías, Beach House, Fazerdaze, Blonde Redhead, and Lush.

That’s all for now, hopefully you get a chance to listen to some of these genres!
