Sports During COVID

Sean Fina, Reporter

After the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) cancelled sports last Spring due to Covid-19, new plans to reinstate sports are beginning to take form.

Some fall sports, like cross-country, are already beginning practices starting September 22. These practices will be different from years before with new social distancing and safety measures. The Orcutt Union District 2020-2021 Reopening Plan includes many new key guidelines.

Students will be broken into pods (or groups) of no more than 10, with only one coach per pod. Athletes will only be allowed to participate if they have been cleared by a doctor and have completed and signed all athletic participation paperwork. The “OAHS Athlete Coach Covid-19 Monitoring Form” will have to be completed by students and coaches before every practice.

On top of these guidelines, there are more regulations in the plan regarding the activity. Sport specific equipment will not be shared. No spectators will be permitted on the sidelines, stands, or school grounds. Additionally, athletes will have to wash hands every 30 minutes. Coaches and the Athletic Trainer will either wear gloves or similarly wash their hands.

Although dates seem to change, fall sport games and events will most likely begin sometime in the winter.
