Three teenage bands from Santa Maria rallied Friday March 8 at the Battle of the Bands fundraising event. Led by an Orcutt Academy High School (OA) student, Emily Beale, the night aimed to showcase a few local musicians while raising money for the OA PTSA.

Sole responsibility was placed on the shoulders of Emily Beale, whose passion for music guided her decision to take charge of the occasion. In the PTA’s time of need, Beale, with previous experience in leadership, stepped up to the plate. A rushed schedule forced her to scramble last minute to find performers and spread the word, which could be reflective of the outcome.

The night’s turnout was unfortunately a bit anticlimactic. With a greater number of seats left open than occupied, the large room owned a sense of emptiness and for lack of a better word- awkwardness. The pause from one band to another highlighted the thick quiet in the room, with some looking around not knowing what to do.

After the show, Beale admitted the night wasn’t exactly how she’d envisioned it. She had hoped more people would show up, but tributes the lack of interest to a fault in previous advertising.

She voiced, “I think I should have promoted it more as a free concert, or a cheap concert. Changing the way I advertised it and doing that sooner would have probably helped a lot.”

It also didn’t help when two bands out of a total five dropped out last minute, leaving Beale in a tight situation. Though, this is not to say the night was a complete flop as she and everyone involved made the best of the situation.

A spark of energy lit up the room as the third and final band rocked out. A group of students rushed the center floor and began dancing playfully to the beat. Their liveliness filled the empty space with a sense of energetic teen angst and enjoyment. Like a switch, the room’s atmosphere shifted from being slightly awkward to fun and carefree.

The winning band, Suburban Sleep, won by a single point ahead of the third band. Surprisingly, they turned down the prize of three professional recording sessions as they would rather record some place more stripped down. The $300 worth of recording time was awarded to the second place band, and that was that.

While the night was not everything she’d expected, Beale remains positive about the end result. She succeeded in her two main goals, for people to enjoy themselves while raising money. Now Beale is looking forward, determined to make next year’s event one for the books.
