After the wildfires in Southern California in 2017 and 2018 scorched the once beloved outdoor school campground,Camp Alegre, the 6th grade science camp had to be relocated. Last year, outdoor school was held at Rancho El Chorro in San Luis Obispo, and this year the camp moved to a campground adjacent to the old campground – Camp Whittier. Senior Dylan McIntire attended the science camp the past two years as a counselor and compares the two locations.

Located in San Luis Obispo, Rancho El Chorro is considered a more beachy, close-knit outdoor campus that focuses a lot on marine biology and understanding local wildlife.

In contrast, Camp Whittier is described as a more secluded, forestry outdoor campus that focuses on wilderness wildlife and going on expeditions.

McIntire was not a huge fan of the Rancho El Chorro campsite because it didn’t feel like a genuine science camp. From his memory, McIntire recalls that “you could literally see a golf resort from a hill [on one of the daytime hikes]”. According to McIntire, the only highlight during his  science camp tenure at Rancho El Chorro seemed to be the three hour trip to Morro Bay Rock, but was not very eventful besides that.

Being at Camp Whittier brought on a feeling of nostalgia for McIntire since it was located close to original location where he went to science camp as a sixth grader. He was also able to repeat most of the hikes he enjoyed there while he was in elementary school.

However, not all of McIntire’s memories were able to relived since the rain and fire caused some of the hiking trails to be hazardous.

Overall, the original location of science camp at Camp Whittier appears to be the better of the two recent campgrounds.
