This year at Orcutt Academy winter break is starting a week later than it usually does, and will end a week later as well.

First off, I do like the decision in terms of giving kids an extra week to study for finals, and we aren’t losing any days of not going to school. Students also have an extra week to bring grades up, and get missing work or assignments finished.

The one con I see to this move is that because winter break will be so close to Christmas itself, many people will be traveling around this time. This could cause a lot of students to miss finals, and force them to take them early. This often leads to students being rushed and not fully prepared for the finals. Missing school on finals week can be detrimental to students, putting their grades at risk by how hefty the final is in the overall gradebook.

In the end, I personally don’t mind the move, as it does have upside and downside to it. I also wouldn’t mind if it stayed the way it always was, because that system had worked too in the years past.
