This year, Orcutt Academy High School’s annual Quiz Bowl is bigger and better than ever. You may remember this event from last year, where teams of four go head to head answering a series of difficult questions until one team comes out on top. As I sat in on a Quiz Bowl practice this Monday, I was able to get a sneak peek of how this year’s Quiz Bowl is going to go down.

The Quiz Bowl was brought to our school by Mr. Gregory Verch who competed in the event himself in high school. In Ohio, where Verch attended school, he competed for his school against other schools in the county; in Ohio, the event would go on for multiple nights, but Verch adapted the event into a one night competition to give our students a chance to participate.

So how does Quiz Bowl work? In each round teams answer a series of questions to complete three rounds. Each round is a little different offering lots of opportunities for teams to earn points. The questions challenge everything students learn in high school, and a little more, from calculus to the culinary arts.

During the Quiz Bowl practice, I observed the bond that the teams shared. As they answered questions correctly and won rounds they awarded each other with high fives and words of encouragement. The excited feeling of competition could be felt throughout the practice.

This year there are eight teams of four competing. Certain teams are sponsored by a club such as the National Honor Society, Christian Club, and Ping Pong Club. The team with the most points in the end of the competition will win a lunch and the opportunity to play against the teacher team.

The teacher team consists of Mr. Graham Culbara, Mr. John Dell’Armo, and Mr. Scott Gelotti. The winning student team will go head to head with the teachers in front of the school at an in-school rally held December 14th.

Quiz Bowl takes place this Friday, December 7th, in the Orcutt Academy High School multi-use room from 6-8 P.M. Come check out the event and support your friends competing. The Spartan Oracle wishes the best of luck to this year’s Quiz Bowl teams.

Great article! I liked the background information on Mr. Verch and how the quiz bowl is organized.
