The novel Room written by Emma Donoghue is a beautiful story about a boy and his mother who have been trapped in a home basement for as long as they can remember.

For Jack, Room is home, but to his mother, Room is a prison where she has been held for seven years. The only other person who lives in the house is a man  Jack refers to as “Old Nick”. It is told from two different points of view: Jack, and his mother. This wonderfully written novel is heartfelt and gut wrenching, making you feel deeply for Jack and his mother and the struggles they go through.

Donoghue does an amazing job portraying the thoughts and feelings Jack has towards living in this confined space his whole life and not knowing what’s behind his four walls. Because Jack has never left Room, he has never met any living things  other than his mother. He befriends inanimate objects in his room, such as Bed, Rug, and Lamp. Donoghue effectively shows the personification of these objects, by capitalizing the first letter of their names.

I recommend this  novel to all audiences. Everyone in some way or another can relate to the struggles Mother and Jack face, not necessarily directly, but by the underlying issues they have. If you’re not a reader, don’t worry, this novel is a film as well.
