Ruby Decker, a freshman here at Orcutt Academy, has been involved in horseback riding, equestrian polo, and show jumping for some time now.

Ruby Decker first got involved in these sports because her family resided in Santa Ynez, where horses are very common. While living in Santa Ynez, her and her sister, Anabella Decker, both never got into horses or sports involved with them, but it was a sort of starting block for their love for horses that began after moving to Santa Maria.

Ruby is able to find time to practice this difficult sport with a busy school schedule at various polo clubs in the area, and she frequently competes against other polo teams, and individually in show jumping. She is often very successful in her competitions, saying that she usually gets within first and third place. She often travels for competitions, usually not too far, but once she traveled as far as Michigan to compete with her horse.

The Decker sisters say that the thing they most enjoy about this is that they are able to form bonds with their horses, and create trust between them. Ruby says that she enjoys the fact that she is able to compete with an animal that has the same goal as she does. Anabella says that horses are “a form of therapy, [and that] you can just be with them… take care for them and it’s like you’re doing something for someone else. They’re very relaxing.”

In the near future, Ruby hopes to go up in her level in equestrian polo, however, she says that she may just stop show jumping due to costly price of the sport. She states that “you really don’t get anything out of it except more competitions.”

Along with that, some horses just aren’t fit for riding, and can be rather difficult to compete with.

“It takes a lot of time and effort, and unfortunately, a ton of money.”

Much like many sports, you have to give your all to polo and other horse-based sports.

According to Anabella, horses tend to “become a lifestyle,” which means that in order to succeed in this sport, an athlete must give it their all. And, as the Decker sisters have said, “you either get into it and do well, or you get into it and realize it was a big mistake.”

I really like how well written and easy going this article was. It presented the story and what the Decker’s are all about in a very clear-cut but fun way. You’re title is also hilarious, and the picture is great!

That’s so cool that we have two sisters in our school that both do such an interesting sport. I never knew that much about polo and I like the point that you either get into it and love it, or find out it was a big mistake. That’s really interesting because I have never really thought about polo or what it takes to play it. This was a great article!
