At Orcutt Academy High School, in order to graduate, students are required to complete forty hours of community service. One student at OA has gone above and beyond this requirement, with over 1,800 service hours under her belt. Senior Netzi Ramos has lead the way in what helping others is all about.

Originally from Guadalupe, Ramos serves frequently within their district. Just recently, she was selected to be on the committee for Guadalupe Schools as they campaigned to pass a measure which would fund a new gymnasium and improve classroom conditions. Ramos operated on phone polls with community members as to why they should vote for this measure; even going door to door to spread the word. In the past, she has worked with the Guadalupe Kids Come First Foundation and her church to support their youth. Ramos spends a whopping 2-4 hours a week doing community service, though sometimes more depending on the project.

As for her intentions in serving, Ramos explained, “When I serve, I think of the outcome and the results. In Guadalupe, not many [students] think that they can make it far, so I do my best to show that we all have the potential to go somewhere and be a part of something big. ”

Ramos also says that by the end of the year, she would like to have 2,500 hours of community service. She clarified, however, that she doesn’t serve for the hours, but because volunteering comes naturally. “I genuinely enjoy giving back to my community. I just want to be an inspiration for others to serve.”

Netzi Ramos is a remarkable and selfless student, human being, and community member. Her love for helping others is not something that can be measured by the hour, but by the lives that she has and continues to change in a positive way.
