It’s not a surprise that with the development of video games would come a competitive scene, testing the abilities of those who have spent thousands of hours perfecting their craft. The entire idea of having a competitive scene in video games that would draw millions of fans would have been unheard of 10 years ago. However, times have changed. And with them, the dedication of the players and fanbase.

Just in 2017, eSports have reeled in more than 427 million unique viewers. That number is pretty large if considering the total viewership of the Super Bowl and World Series combined fell under 130 million this last year (Statista.com). And it’s expected to grow as organizations begin to host more fan-friendly events.

One of the most notable of these events was the 2018 Major for the game Counter Strike: Global Offensive. It was held in Boston, where 23 teams from around the world competed in a $1,000,000 prize pool. The event consisted of hundreds of stands selling everything from food to team merchandise. The final itself for the event brought in 1.1 million concurrent viewers. Setting a new record for concurrent viewers on the streaming platform, Twitch.

As numbers rise, you have to ask yourself, are eSports the entertainment of the future? The NFL themselves stated how last year they were met with a record low viewership and didn’t exactly know why. The world is already leaning towards technology to assist them in their everyday lives, when will they do the same with sports?
