Students at Orcutt Academy have many opportunities to better themselves and prepare for college. One of the most prestigious of these is National Honor Society. NHS is a service-based organization which helps students get involved in the community and improve their resume.

According to Mitchell Modlin, an NHS officer, NHS is a great opportunity for every student. NHS provides students with opportunities to get involved in their community and get community service hours. While this is much like California Scholarship Federation, another service-based organization, NHS seems to be the more elite of the two. Modlin says this is because students, “Have to have had a 3.5 average GPA throughout their high school career” to be in NHS. They are then invited to apply in their junior year and need to complete three essay questions to finally join. This means students in NHS are typically of a higher-academic caliber.

Modlin concluded that he would definitely recommend NHS to other students. He noted that it is already a requirement for students at OA to have at least 40 hours of community service, and NHS is a great way for them to get that done while enhancing their resume. Personally, Mitch Modlin is grateful to NHS, saying, “Being a leader in NHS has cultivated my leadership skills.”

NHS member Michi Hinders agreed with this saying, “NHS is overall good, and does a lot of great things.” Students who are invited to join NHS can complete the application and join at the start of each year. More information on NHS is available from Mrs. Cedillo in room 26, or from the NHS website.
