On Sunday, February 18th, ladies and men of the film industry hit the red carpet for the BAFTA awards. As always, commentators were focused on the attendants’ attire, with Kate Middleton at the center of the spotlight in a controversial green dress.

Starting with the Golden Globe Awards in early January, 2018, actresses have donned black to award shows in support of the Time’s Up movement. Well, if you haven’t already put two-and-two together, Kate Middleton’s dress has made headlines because obviously, it wasn’t black.

On twitter, users criticized Middleton for not standing with the movement, even though the Royal family typically avoids getting involved with political issues. One user tweeted, “quite a bummer to see that the Duchess of Cambridge didn’t wear black to the #BAFTAs and not a #TimesUp pin on either Cambridge. There is nothing political about standing up to sexual assault. This should’ve been an easy choice for them to make, and they failed.”

Another woman said, “Kate Middleton shuns #timesup black dress code, clearly not a woman’s woman! #EEBAFTAs.”

Luckily, some ladies stood true to the purpose of the women’s movement and chose to support Middleton regardless of her dress. Like this user who tweeted, “poor #KateMiddleton she can’t win either way. Women bullying each other over a dress colour? Really? You go Kate you looked fab.”

To drop the mic once and for all, here’s what my tweet would say: “#TimesUp for the women bullying Kate Middleton based on the color of her dress. Why don’t we stop worrying about such petty things, and work on uplifting one another like we should #DoBetter.”

They seriously think she’s anti-feminist just because she’s not wearing black? How much our society has sunk.

This seems like yet another case of needless controversy on twitter. Great writing and article.
