Recently, I wrote an article regarding the need for self-defense classes to be implemented into Orcutt Schools. After looking into the possibility, I discovered there are some major obstacles that currently defer administration from implementing such programs.

According to Ted Lyon (Principal of Lakeview Jr. High School), self-defense could potentially cause a liability problem. If students use their newfound skills to initiate violence rather than prevent it, the school could be held accountable.  While an understandable argument, this concerned me.

Students at Lakeview are no strangers to bullying and aggressive behavior. A 7th grader at the school claimed to have witnessed two physical fights in January (though the extent of these fights was not clarified). This is not necessarily reflective of the school’s ability to prevent violence, but reflective of the society we live in. Santa Maria is often referred to as “Murder City” due to its abnormally high rates of homicide and gang-related violence per capita (more than San Jose, Sacramento, and Oakland combined). In a city overrun with violence, it is no surprise that students begin to experience aggressive situations early on.  Whether or not school staffs in the Orcutt Union School District are made aware of all fights and bullying is unclear, but self-defense classes may help students protect themselves against bullies.

If violent behavior is here in our city, it would be beneficial to teach students to escape these situations and defend themselves both now and in the future. The Oracle will follow up on this claim of liability and research more to see if self-defense is a viable option to help keep our students safe.
