Our OA girls’ varsity soccer team led a formidable assault against the Nipomo Titans on Monday, January 29th. The game was one of tears, true grit, and compassionate sportsmanship. The game was drawn into two rounds of overtime and resulted in a 3 – 3 tie.

Even from the get-go this was a game to be remembered. Both teams had their offenses stacked to attack and defenses on both sides that were especially fierce. Nipomo’s defense was unable to keep the ball from entering their side of the field for much of the game, but they made it a point to not give our Spartans any slack. Likewise, the Spartans’ offense kept Nipomo on their toes for the majority of the game, as the Nipomo varsity girls were just barely able to fend off any OA athletes from scoring.

The star players of this game were definitely sophomores Mariana Chavez and Mecaela Lopez, as well as senior Emilie Evensmoen, who all scored for our team during the blitz of this fiery game. However, before a goal was scored, there was a long, hard fought battle to get the ball in the net. At no point did the game really turn to favor of any team. No goals were scored consecutively by either of the schools, and the times in between scoring were long and well-fought. The game was drawn into overtime with a 3 – 3 score. Not a single point was scored during this round, so an additional round of overtime was brought upon the game. In the end, neither team would give way, resulting in a 3 – 3 tie.

I asked OA varsity athlete Brooke Stewart on her thoughts on the game. She remarked, “We had the ball on their side most of the time and had [about] 21 shots. We had a lot of good through-balls and attacks but [our] defense did really well too.”

Catch the team’s next away game against Cambrio High School today, on Tuesday, February 6th.
