Why Vine 2.0 should NOT happen

The possible resurrection of one late social media platform has plenty of fans “ded.”

Recently, Vine co-founder Dom Hoffman announced on Twitter that he is “going to work on a follow up to Vine.” Soon after his tweet, Hoffman posted an image of “V2” which closely resembled the former Vine logo. As thousands tried to decode Hoffman’s cryptic message, the rumor of a Vine remake exploded across the internet.

There are still many unanswered questions about this potential comeback. All we know so far is that Hoffman will be funding the outside project himself.

Although many are intrigued at the idea of another shot, the return of Vine isn’t worth wasting time on. The dream of a second Vine should be just that. With respect for the old six-second video app, here are six reasons why Vine 2 should not happen:

1. Expectations are too high.

There is no way Vine 2 can live up to the hype that it has received. Already, fans have begun to speculate on the format of the app, and whether or not it will be similar to the retired version. In a addition, former users have created lists of people they say shouldn’t be invited, including past creators such as Lele Pons, and the Paul brothers. As of now, people have too high of expectations for a reboot to succeed.

2. Vine already failed!

As popular as the app once was, there is no hope in reviving something that is already dead. The fact that Vine failed in past, only makes it more likely to fail in the future. Just as the Beatles said, let it be.

3. Nothing can compare to the OG Vine.

Let’s be honest, Vine is iconic. For the same reason that Solange will never be as popular as Beyoncé, Vine 2 will never be as loved as the original. Vine was the most fantastic surprise before it’s founders realized it’s potential, and ruined it with their extra ideas. If only Hoffman had enough respect for the OG Vine, he would understand it can’t be duplicated.

4. We need to let Vine R.I.P.

Instead of a revival, what this deceased app needs is proper mourning. The first step in grieving is recognizing that what is gone, is not lost. In translation, every valuable vine you’ll ever need is on YouTube. We need closure, not a reboot.

5. The idea behind Vine is no longer original.

In order for Vine 2 to be successful, it needs to be entirely unique. The quick-video format has been adapted on apps like Musical.ly, and already existed on others, such as Snapchat. Considering how original the app will need to be, it doesn’t even seem fair that it could piggy back on the Vine title.

6. Other apps have taken over.

There’s no doubt that the industry for social media apps is already saturated. For Vine to re-enter into this competitive market would be extremely difficult at the least. Snapchat and Instagram continue to dominate, and it doesn’t look like they’re about to make room for an old friend. Vine’s creators are better off counting their losses and moving on.

Rest in peace to Vine. You will be missed, but never forgotten!
