Fires have swept across Northern California, causing death and destruction. These wildfires have been the among the most deadliest and destructive fires in California history.

Known as the “Wine Country Fires”, the 2017 California wildfires have been reigning terror across Northern California. They have already taken more than 40 lives, and the numbers continue to grow as officials scour the wreckage of numerous destroyed buildings.

One of the fires known, as “The Tubbs Fire” killed over 20 people alone and is now ranked as the most destructive wildfire in California history. There are still thousands of firefighters battling the flames, though the five largest were reported to be 90% contained as of Monday. Over 100,000 people have had to flee their homes or have been evacuated. These people have been living in shelters and evacuation zones, and organizations such as the Red Cross and the Federal Emergency Management Agency for disaster relief have been providing food, clothes, and other supplies to victims. Still, people whose homes somehow survived the fire still can’t return as smoke damage leaves many houses unsafe to live in. Toxic waste from batteries and other things destroyed by the fire also make areas ravaged by the fire unsafe, and officials are working hard on a toxic waste clean up but it could take months.

Here in Orcutt, we can help by donating or volunteering with the Red Cross. Calfire also warns us here in Southern California that the high temperatures lately make the whole LA area vulnerable to fires and said people need to be extra careful not to do anything that could cause a fire. They also recommend to be prepared and have a plan just in case a fire does spring up.
