Parent Square: Another social media for OA?

What do Aeries, email, reminder texts, social media, and the Spartan Oracle have in common? All these programs constantly remind us of events, due dates, and assignments. So is implementing another program to do the same thing really needed?

Orcutt Academy has a new technical program called Parent Square. Parent Square is a program that lets teachers and school administrators connect with parents and students, and also lets teachers send out reminders about assignments and events going on in the classroom or on campus.

However, most students already get reminders for events or assignments through programs that the schools has been using. Students can receive reminders on events from the school through text message and even from clubs like choir and FCC and from classes as well. Also, many clubs, sports teams, ASB, and even the Oracle have Instagram pages that they post reminders for the members to see what is going on around Orcutt Academy. Similarly, we have Aeries where you can check when assignments are due and which ones you haven’t done yet. And then there’s always email if you need to contact a teacher. Now the question is this: if we already have so many programs constantly reminding us, do we really need another one too?

I asked a couple of students what they thought about Parent Square. Senior Kathleen Merrill said, ¨I don’t see the point of Parent Square because I already receive reminders by text and my parents receive reminders about grades and assignments from Aeries.” The other student I talked to was junior Josie Allen, and she had some advice to give to the school. She stated that there are already “too many reminder programs that the school uses, and instead of adding another one, the school should try to condense it instead.¨

Talking to students brings me to a some final points on Parent Square.

  1. The school needs to stop adding so many programs and if they want to add a new one they should get rid of a previous one.
  2. Since students check their text and social media multiple times a day, they are most likely to see reminders from there instead of a program that is just for the school.
  3. Parent Square doesn’t have a point because teachers always tell us that as students, we need to be responsible and talk to our teachers instead of our parents. High schoolers are old enough to do things on their own.

In the end, Parent Square is useless when it comes to high school and Orcutt Academy should not focus on something that students and others don’t care about.
