Riding in the Sky
For the past three weeks, I have been on independent study while vacationing in Hawaii. This is part two of a three part series on some things I expereinced in Hawaii.
Kauai is nicknamed the Garden Island, overflows with greenery and is less densely populated than the three big islands. Many movies are filmed on The Garden Island because of the habitat, including Pirates of the Caribbean, Indiana Jones, Soul Surfer, and of course Jurassic Park.
The island is 552 square miles; however only about 20% of the island is accessible by car, leaving many hidden gems on the island.
Although there are three major canyons, only one is driveable and the others can only be seen through the air. That is one of many reasons why the best way to see the whole island is by helicopter.
The ride was much smoother than I anticipated and headphones blocked out the noise while playing sweet, Hawaiian music. The pilots took me over the ridges and through canyons all over the island, including the famous Nāpali Coast. In some places the pilot would even drop into a valley and do a 360 for complete views.
We saw over 100 waterfalls and more plant varieties than I could count. My ride was filled with facts about the island and was very educational on top of the sightseeing. For example the pilot explained how the Hawaiian people got to the island and what they brought with them.
