The Orcutt Academy Interact Club meets in Mrs. Chavez’s room at lunch every other Monday and focuses on community service and global understanding. The club is student led and works with Rotary International.
Orcutt Academy’s Interact Club is headed by Jerilyn Lindsay as President and Derek Sportsman as Vice President. They meet in Room 15 where Mrs. Chavez is the self-proclaimed “cheerleader” of the group.
Mrs. Chavez wants the students to organize and plan all the community service and fundraisers. Interact club has held book drives and coat drives for our local community. Last year the club raised money to buy water filters, which were sent to La Paz, Mexico.
Another fundraiser they did last year was called the Disconnect-a-thon, where community members pledged money if the students turned off their electronics for 5 hours. While they were disconnected, the students played board games and ate pizza. Interact club intends to repeat that fundraiser this year. A further goal the club has this year is to gather support for people to become organ donors.
This year Interact wants to gain more members in order to make the biggest impact possible. Jerilyn states, “Interact develops leaders, professional skills, and international understanding for young people.” Derek also wants more members. He says that Interact will “happily accept new members at any time of the year”. Regardless, Jerilyn knows “We’re a small family with big hearts dedicated to cooperatively using our skills to benefit the people around us.”
The Spartan Oracle wishes the club the best in the 2016-2017 school year.
