Orcutt Academy Junior Chloe Sheley has made it far in this year’s Poetry Out Loud competition. Getting through the school competition, and taking first place at the county competition, she is now ready to move on to the state competition in Sacramento. I sat down with her to find out more on her thoughts and how she has prepared for it.
Chloe chose the poem ¨Personal¨ by Tony Hoagland and shared, ¨I tried to find poems that I understood… This one I understood and there weren’t any crazy words that I didn’t know. I felt like there was an actual story behind it so I liked that.¨
Chloe says practicing her poem in Mr. Culbara’s class really helped her, along with just practicing in the shower and repeating it in her head.
She also shares, ¨Now that I have to learn two new poems for State Competition, I realized there is a lot of preparation that goes into it.¨ Chloe revealed her upcoming nerves and excitement for the competition as she explained how it works to me. ¨This competition is scary because there will be three rounds to it.¨ Along with the poem she recited for the school competition, she will have two learn two new ones, one being twenty-five lines or fewer, and one from the 20th century, which she is definitely not fond of. ¨I just try not to think about it too much, and I am going to be practicing with Mr. Culbara many times.¨
Chloe heads to Sacramento this weekend to compete against all of the other semi-finalists in the state. If she takes the title in Sacramento, she will move onto the finals in Washington D.C. on April 25.
Best wishes and congratulations to Chloe Sheley for putting on an awesome show in this years Poetry Out Loud and making it to the State Competition! Orcutt Academy is proud to call you one of our own, and we can’t wait to see how far she will go.
